Nothing says Happy Valentine’s Day like piping hot Mandu!

There’s no way to sugar coat this, my school sucks. I have taken the name of the school out of my posts to protect the innocent but there’s no tap dancing around the subject. Everyday, it’s something else. I haven’t even been at my school for one full month but pretty much all the Hagwon… Continue reading Nothing says Happy Valentine’s Day like piping hot Mandu!

Pizza Etang

This is the Pizza Etang takeout menu. Everyday when we arrive home from work there is a slew of takeout menus taped or magnetized to our apt. door. Some we keep, some we don’t. Pizza Etang was a keeper because some of their menu items were printed in English, always a plus. The phone conversation… Continue reading Pizza Etang

Weekend WIPs

A baby apron ala Cheeky Mama at I Have To Say…  Thanks for the inspiration, Randi.  I made it for a friend’s daughter who just turned 2 last month.  She has been really into fake food (the babe, not my friend) and playing in her new kiddie kitchen so I thought an apron would be… Continue reading Weekend WIPs

Weekend

It’s been a pretty relaxing weekend here in the land of the morning calm. I went to dinner with Ally at Nolboo on Friday night. Nolboo is a very popular restaurant on the Shinjang-dong and is known for their Kalbi Jim or Korean beef short ribs. Most of the restaurants here cook the meat at… Continue reading Weekend

10 Man March…

Well it’s been a busy couple of days around here so a slow Sunday night is very welcome. School on Thursday went well, the kids loved the fruit. I brought a few pieces to shake things up a bit. The orange puppets were a big hit. I taught two 20-minute classes of 34 seven-year olds.… Continue reading 10 Man March…

My daily dose of cultural musing…

This is the Hauzen SEW-6HR122L. A pretty fancy machine, it even plays a tune at the beginning and end of each load.  The tune is kind of a cross between an old Gameboy game and a funky synthesizer ditty my brother’s old Casio keyboard used to play.  The Hauzen was a bargaining chip used in… Continue reading My daily dose of cultural musing…

Morning and night…

Fried egg and swiss on a toasted onion bagel with a steaming cup of Chai latte. Oreos and milk are the same no matter where you go. There is nothing like having your comfort foods when you are halfway around the world. The walls and counter of this kitchen remind me of a stark hospital… Continue reading Morning and night…

I never met a cake I didn’t like…

We had a wonderful time at the wedding and everything was beautiful.  Red flowers in roses, tulips and even red calla lilies were flowering on all the tables.  The cake was made by a local cakemaker, Heather Luse who did a wonderful job on the cake’s exterior and interior.

Groom's Cake

This was the groom’s cake served at the rehearsal dinner of the New Year’s Eve wedding we went to this weekend.  The groom was, of course, a huge Grateful Dead fan so the bride ordered this cake for him.  It looks quite small in the picture but the cake was probably 18′ in diameter.  It… Continue reading Groom's Cake
